Hi Guys & Girls,
Feeling very opinionated today, so let’s start with my first love (other than family) MMA and work on from there! I’m gonna start with a somewhat controversial first topic, the UFC and Reebok’s sponsorship. When it was first announced to the public that Reebok would have exclusivity for UFC events, I don’t think there were too many happy people. From there the uniforms were shown and to me, were ridiculous. To this day I have not changed my stance on it, black and white or white and black with different colours for your name. Kind of reminds me of the quote “you can have any colour you want, as long as it’s black”. From there the partnership has gone from one bumbling scenario to another, from Jacob “Stitch” Duran the legendary cut man, to cutting off Northern Ireland on an Ireland t-shirt, to Anderson Aldo the merging of Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo to create one freakish athlete!
This week the UFC announced that they had fined 3 people who fought recently for violations of the Reebok deal. One of the people who they have fined is Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The reason why is because he wears a patch on his shorts that his grandma made back for his first fight shorts. I get that Reebok believes it is paying an awful lot of money for exclusivity but to remove all last vestiges of individuality from the fighters is ridiculous.
Imagine telling Michael Jordan that he couldn’t wear his North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls outfit. Or telling Usain Bolt what footwear to wear when running the 100m. To me this deal is great for the fighters that have transcended, like Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey or even someone like Paige vanZant who has a standalone contract with Reebok, but for the other fighters it seems to be a kick in the teeth with no real benefit. Just because you tell someone repeatedly that the contract is going to be good for them, doesn’t make it so, especially when all evidence seems to oppose the view.
Away from Reebok, let’s move onto UFC 197. The event is scheduled to take place on my birthday, the 5th of March. Well I have been given two early birthday presents by the UFC. Conor McGregor vs Rafael dos Anjos and Miesha Tate vs Holly Holm. We’ll start with the main event. Firstly commiserations to Frankie Edgar, the Featherweight contender will have to wait longer for Conor. Not sure how he feels about all this, but from McGregor’s view point, why the hell wouldn’t you go after RDA for the chance to be the first ever dual champion in the UFC? I certainly would. From dos Anjos’ perspective it really is “Red Panty Night”.
Dos Anjos has proven himself to be a very good fighter. He has taken out Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis and Benson Henderson. Not to mention the emphatic victory over Cowboy Cerrone. Assuming he is “on his game” and doesn’t underestimate Notorious, it’s hard to see past a RDA victory, wiping a little bit of shine off of McGregor.
Having said that this is the Notorious One. This is a man that took out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds. Can we really afford to keep betting against him? I don’t know is the honest answer. At first glance you would assume RDA is taller, heavier and has a longer reach due to the fact that dos Anjos fights 10lbs heavier that Conor, but having checked this, McGregor is 1 inch taller and will have a 4 inch reach advantage. He also has previous in that he was the dual champion in Cage Warriors. I’m gonna pick Conor, largely because I don’t like betting against him. As he said “Have I been wrong yet? Have I been wrong yet? NO” (obligatory slamming of the mic too just for good measure).
Let’s move onto the other title fight. Before we start this is the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight title fight not involving Ronda Rousey. Feels strange, sad and yet amazing all in one little package. Strange because she was and I feel still is the queen. She is still a pioneer of the sport, would Miesha and Holly be in the UFC if it wasn’t for Ronda? Doubtful. The fact is she is a crossover star who the UFC built the women’s empire upon, the only other woman I could see Dana potentially creating a division for would have been Gina Carano. So, Ronda being this megastar makes it sad in a way that she was defeated in such devastating fashion and amazing because it reinvigorates the whole division, which in reality was becoming stale due to the dominance of Rousey and the UFC’s lack of promotion of anyone not named Ronda.
Anyway moving on, this fight is a vindication for Holly who didn’t want to wait another 6 months for Ronda, for Miesha who earned the shot that was eventually given to Holm and of course the fans who deserve to see fighters fight. From Ronda’s perspective, I know I said I was finished on Ronda, but she keeps looming large, this is smart. It gives her time to get her thoughts together, do her films then get back to work. From Holly’s perspective it gets her back in the octagon, keeping her sharp and making money. The benefit to Miesha is obvious.
For the fans and the UFC this fight makes a lot of sense too. I’ll leave that to Miesha to explain… “Here’s why I think the fight with Holly and I makes sense: For one, I haven’t ever fought Holly before. For two, I was Ronda’s biggest challenge until Holly so obviously I’ve proven that I’m a standout in the division and so is Holly, if Holly would beat me, then they could still set up that great rematch that they want between her and Ronda. If I beat Holly, then I’m 5-0 and I beat the girl who beat Ronda, what better case could they ever make to have me fight Ronda again? I think that fight sells itself.”
Holly has obviously proven herself to be a phenomenal striker in all 3 of her careers, MMA, Boxing and Kickboxing. She is a true testament to the idea that if you give a boxer sprawl training they will be extremely dangerous. Though based on her takedown defence against Ronda and the fact that she took Rousey down, sprawl training does her a disservice. Miesha is an outstanding grappler, having been a standout wrestler in high school and she is usually “well up” for a scrap. I want to root for both, I’d love to see Ronda’s face if Miesha lifted that title, I think she would be mortified. Holly winning sells itself for Ronda too. Either way this one is shaping up to be a good fight and I personally cannot wait. My hope is that either result brings back a re-invigorated Ronda.
I thought, shall I do one more MMA topic? Then I thought screw it, its my blog I’m gonna do it. But have decided not too, there’s too much MMA and a lot more Ronda than I intended in this blog. I’m sorry! I would have thought that you will have a passing interest if you are a regular here or know to skip using the pictures.
So, moving away from MMA. As you will know if you read my last post, I have been playing Fallout 4. If you haven’t played it, are a gamer or are into open world sandbox style games, it comes highly recommended by me.
When you first start out the missions don’t seem all that difficult. Run to the vault. Kill a couple bugs. Jobs a gooden. At a certain point, all the baddies seem overpowered, I genuinely felt unsafe without the mechanised power armour. Then all of a sudden you feel able to cope without the power armour. Not to the extent where I’m gonna go after Deathclaws but enough that I’m not burning out fusion cores… Then as the late great Rowdy Roddy Piper said “Just when they think they have all the answers, I change the questions!” Everything seems overpowered again. It’s like a constant struggle to stay on an even keel. Just a quick side note, damn Rad Scorpions. That is all.
My wife really enjoys the building of the settlement aspect. Which means I have to scavenge a lot when I’m killing people. My advice is to pick up everything you can. No matter how small and inconsequential it may seem. Make regular trips to Sanctuary to drop off all the junk you have picked up. Desk fans and duct tape are your allies! We are 21 hours in and I never felt I would be so happy to see a desk fan or a roll of duct tape on a desk in an abandoned factory!
On a fitness note, I have carried the excesses of Christmas into January. Mainly because I have been on holiday and why the hell not? But as of Monday my wife and I are gonna get back to the grind. Me to prepare for martial arts and bodybuilding and Jen wants to lose some baby weight. Time to break out the delicious, yet highly nutritious overnight oats and protein shakes again. Stand by for updates!
Carpe Diem Guys
